What the drains are like in Thorp Arch

Pipework and build eras
A small estate village that changed completely inside thirty years. In 1945 it was forty seven estate owned cottages. By the mid seventies it was over a hundred houses, and in 1967 part of Thorp Arch Park was sold for forty three more, which nearly doubled the village at a stroke. Today it is around 350 dwellings, roughly half of them eighteenth and nineteenth century cottages inside the conservation area, with Rudgate Park, Woodlands and Walton Chase making up another 157 between them.
How long we are
Three miles. Either the lanes east through Walton, or the A659 to Boston Spa and over Thorp Arch bridge. The bridge is the only crossing and the obvious pinch point.
Access and parking
Two separate problems, because it is two settlements a mile apart. The old village is a medieval plan, linear along one road to a green, walled in limestone and tight. Thorp Arch Park is the opposite, houses set well back with long private drives and therefore long private runs. The trading estate is commercial drainage and a different job again.
Areas that differ
Conservation area since 1969, revised in 2009 to take in the hall, the park and the old railway station. The Ings downstream of the road bridge is floodplain, and the Environment Agency flood warning area for the Wharfe at Boston Spa names Thorp Arch Park. The old Royal Ordnance Factory site is now the trading estate and the British Library, so whatever is under there is legacy industrial.
