Three distinct generations in one village. The historic core along High Street is almost entirely built between 1770 and 1830, in magnesian limestone. West End came later, put up as accommodation for the Thorp Arch munitions workers and kept on as housing after the war. From the early 1970s a large belt of estate housing went in to the south and west, bigger than the old village it was added to.

Three miles down the A659. One of the quickest runs we do.

Access and parking

The village runs in a line along the A659, with a lot of narrow lanes, arches and mews openings off High Street. Handsome, but they do not take a van, and the houses sit close to the road behind low limestone walls. The 1970s estates to the south are ordinary estate access with driveways.

Areas that differ

The conservation area covers the Georgian core. The late twentieth century estate housing south of High Street was deliberately taken out of it in 2009 as not being of historic significance, which tells you how sharply the two halves of the village differ. There is an Environment Agency flood warning area on the Wharfe covering River View, Bridge Road and Thorp Arch Park.
